.In this period, which is usually one of sexual trial and error, theyoung man who consistently experiences defeat by being unable to participateadequately in sexual relations is handicapped in the mate-selection process.Themost common problems, besides an inability to associate comfortably withfemales at all, are premature ejaculation and impotence.In either ease, the sexualcontract is not fulfilled and frustration, rather than increasing experience in themore subtle intimacies of a relationship, develops.A young man requested that Dr.Erickson treat him for premature ejaculation byusing hypnosis.Dr.Erickson reports:This young man was thirty years old and unmarried when he came to me.He hadsuffered from premature ejaculation during his first attempt at sexual relations when hewas twenty years old.He had had a most unhappy reaction to that experience andthought it was punishment for his immorality.He felt damaged and incompetent.From thenon, he became obsessional about the subject and read everything he could find on sex.Hesought new and different women from every stratum of society, racial group, and physicaltype, all to no avail.He had really proved to himself that he suffered from prematureejaculation.When I asked him for a complete description of his behavior in the sexual art, hedeclared that it was invariably the same whether his partner was an aging, drunkenprostitute or au attractive, charming, well-educated girl.He never had any difficulty insecuring and maintaining an erection, even after ejaculation.However, upon an attempt atinsertion, ejaculation occurred first.Many times he had disregarded the prematureejaculation and engaged in active coitus, but this gave him neither pleasure norsatisfaction.He regarded it as an unpleasant effort in a desperate desire to achievesexual competence.Usually he would persist in this intravaginal masturbation until readyfor the second ejaculation, whereupon he would unwillingly but compulsively withdraw.He would then be unable to gain insertion until he had completed the second ejaculationexternally.He sought me out as a last resort.A half dozen sessions were taken up with letting him bemoan his difficulties.But he didgo into a trance, with a considerable amount of posthypnotic amnesia.He was questionedextensively in a trance about his current liaisons, and I learned that he was assiduouslycourting a prostitute who lived in an apartment house in a second-floor suite, locatedabove the entrance to a court.Inside the court, it was necessary to go up a stairway andalong a balcony before reaching her apartment.I offered the suggestion that when hevisited her he would develop an erection immediately upon entering the court and maintainit until he left the court doe, alone or in her company.He never did have any trouble gettingan erection, so let him get it as he entered the court.Then I spent about two hours in along, rambling conversation.However, systematically and unobtrusively I interwove intothe monologue a whole series of posthypnotic suggestions.I made confusing elaborationsuntil the entire list had been presented.I suggested that neurotic ideas serve a purpose forthe personality.That was one of the posthypnotic suggestions.Neurotic manifestationsare often seemingly constant but are fundamentally inconstant, since the purpose theyserve changes as time passes and circumstances change and the personality alters.Many varieties of neurotic symptoms can actually reverse, and do reverse.Correction of aneurotic problem can occur effectively and quite accidentally because of coincidentalmeasures as well as by deliberate effort.No neurotic can really know what will happenwith his problems at a given time.Repression of a neurotic problem can occur by thedevelopment of another, which in itself is beneficial.A specific neurotic symptom, such aspremature ejaculation, can without warning be reversed into a frightening delay inejaculation, a delay of half an hour or more.He would really have something to worryabout if that ever happened to him.He really would know how to worry both consciouslyand unconsciously.Such a development would undoubtedly result in a totally unexpectedinternal ejaculation.Then he would be confronted by the tremendous problem ofaccomplished sexuality, which would require constructive utilization.For the next week or ten days there would be a growing unrest in him presaging animpending change in his life.Here he was forbidden discussion and was told to do nothingfor a while, not even to think, but just to rest comfortably.I gave him an appointment for thenext day, which was Tuesday, and for Wednesday, and for Friday.On Tuesday I saw himbriefly but did not allow him to talk.I told him he would be given, in return for the briefnessof the interview, a very special appointment on Sunday.I knew that Saturday night washis regular meeting with this prostitute.The Wednesday appointment was similarlyhandled, and there was further emphasis on the Sunday appointment, to the effect that hewould really have to give out for that interview.Fridays interview was also brieflyhandled, with emphasis upon the special character of what he would have to relate onSunday.Three brief interviews, full fee charged, and a promise of making up for thatshortness of time by a special interview on Sunday.However, when he came in onSunday morning he explained to me that he had something more urgent than whatever Ihad in mind for that appointment.Because of certain developments he had experienced,what I was interested in would have to be postponed.His story was that the three previous brief interviews, or brushoffs, as he termedthem, had made him restless, unhappy, uncertain.He had been so ill at ease after theFriday interview that he sought out a girl he had been seeing frequently but with whom hehad not yet had sex relations.He suggested dinner and the theater.However, during theevening he had been inattentive to his companion and preoccupied.Recurrently thequestion popped into his mind of whether or not he actually could ejaculate intravaginally.A doubt about whether he could - previously he had known that he couldn't! But he wasdoubting whether he could.Almost at once the idea would elude his mind when he tried toremember what he'd been thinking.Shortly the idea would again pop into his mind only toelude him again.Over and over this occurred.As he was returning his companion to her apartment, he developed an erection uponentering the courtyard of her apartment house.This persisted, although he was still sopreoccupied with his elusive thought that he did not contemplate sex relations,Nevertheless, upon entering the apartment his partner manifested such aggressive,amorous behavior that he promptly went to bed with her.Because be was stillpreoccupied, he allowed her to take the aggressive role, and his reaction to the insertionwas one of sudden fear that be would not be able to have an ejaculation.So absorbingwas this fear that "I forgot completely all of my past popping off.All I could think of wasthat I wanted to pop into her and I was afraid I couldn't." He responded to this fear byactive coitus, and for some unknown reason "watching the minute hand on my wristwatch, which I never wear to bed."
